Major Project Activities to Date:

  • During the 2004-2005 school year, a group of employees from the Sunny View Public School (for children with special needs) in Toronto, as part of an educational project decided to get the students from each class to put together a package for students with similar needs in Somaliland. These packages included educational books, story books, chalks, pencils, pens, erasers, notebooks, sharpeners. which are basic necessities for children's education.
  • July 2005, Suhur searched for children with disabilities to give them the packages. while on these first account visit she realized something more sustainable was needed. The kids really deserved an institution like Sunny View Public School. Hence research was done as to what it would take to open a school for children with disabilities in Somaliland.
  • July 2006, on her visit to Somaliland Suhur went to Hargeisa mayor's office describing her vision and requesting a piece of land for the project.
  • From then on, Ms. Hassan Abib started to talk with every representative that she could and make aware of the project. She also went to the media to get support for the project and thus appeared in numerous newspapers in Somaliland. She also put together a videotape documenting the condition of the disabled kids in Somaliland.
  • September 2006, Ms. Hassan Abib presented the videotape to the principle of Sunny View Public School Ms. Annie Appleby who gave her the authorization to form a group within the school and to start requisitioning the equipments that were decommissioned (walkers, wheelchairs, crutches, standers.)
  • September 2006 the project received Layout design for school.
  • June 2007 Project of Hope hosted fundraising event at Atlanta Party Hall, which was arranged as a dinner and dance concert to collect money to build the school in Somaliland. The event a success received a widespread support from the school's staff as well as members of the Somaliland community in Toronto. It was a success and the proceeds were just over 20,000$.
  • August 2007, the chair along with Sam Jamac the project co-chair on their visit to Somaliland received the Land Title, Land Survey plan and Certificate Of Occupancy (COO) and proper authorization to build a replica of Sunny View Public School in Hargeisa, Somaliland. This land was donated jointly by the city of Hargeisa and the government of Somaliland. Furthermore, there was the inauguration of Hargeisa Project of Hope supervisory volunteer team and thus the land has been fenced and foundations have been laid.
